After watching the World Cup final, you may find yourself inspired to head out and try to pull off your own game-winning shot. Whether you’re a soccer neophyte or a champ wanting to keep his or her game tight, these tips will make your game even better, and maybe even get you a little bit closer to that Cup.

  1. Soccer is a team sportso communicate. Either speaking or signals works, but make sure it’s a code your whole team understands. If everybody knows how to relate to their teammates, they’ll feel more comfortable with the ball, and game play will be quicker.
  2. That’s tip twospeed. Don’t ever keep the ball in one place for too long, but dance around it with quick kicks and wait for a defender to come to you. Then, pass it to a teammateand use your code to make sure they know what you’re planning.
  3. Make simple passes. As much fun as it may be to fake out an opponent, doing so usually fakes out your team mates as well, which is a waste of time at beast and could lead to a free kick for the other team at worst.
  4. However, faking out an opponent can be an easy way to freeze a defender that’s cramping your style. Just act like you’re about to kick the ball (put your whole body into it if you feel like it) and watch the defender become a statue, making it easy for you to get past them and hand the ball off to your waiting teammate.
  5. Make sure you have the right equipment. The right soccer shoes can mean the difference between a perfect game and a serious injury, which is what you’ll get if you go for looks over comfort. Let your style come out in the grace with which you overpower your opponent, not in your footwear.
