These soccer colleges will take you to school

Soccer may not be behind as many school rivalries as basketball and football, but there are still some schools that have made a name for themselves in the sport. If you’re a soccer player, these are the names you want to see scouting you out, so do your homework and check out the list below.

  • Indiana University: Jerry Yeagley coached the Hoosiers for 31 years and was responsible for 6 of the team’s 7 NCAA crowns. Currently, Jerry’s son Todd is Head Coach. 13 players from the Hoosiers have gone on to the US men’s national soccer team, and six each have gone on to the Olympics and the World Cup.
  • Messiah College: The Messiah College Falcons have won seven DIII titles since 2000, and the women’s team has triumphed in three of the past five championships. Located in the village of Grantham in Pennsylvania, Messiah holds the honor of being the only school in the NCAA to win the Men’s and Women’s National Championships n the same yeara feat they pulled off three times.
  • University of CaliforniaLos Angeles: Each year, you can count on seeing UCLA for quite a while during the NCAA competition. The Bruins made 26 consecutive appearances at the National Championship Tournament before 2008, and were also the college of choice for Cobi Jones, the leader in caps for the United States National Team.
  • University of North CarolinaChapel Hill: The Tar Heels women’s team has held four titles since 2003, and the men do their best to keep up. Overall, the women’s team has won 20 out of 22 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and 20 out of 28 NCAA national championships. Head Coach Anson Dorrance is currently in his 29th year of coaching, and shows no signs of stopping.
  • University of MarylandCollege Park: UMD is home to the Terrapins, or the Terps for short. In 2005 and 2008, the men’s team won the College Cup, coached by Sasho Cirovski. The Men’s Soccer games are characterized by the appearance of the Crew, a group of fans who sit behind the goal of the opposing team andahem”berate” the opposing goalie. The Crew even travels to away games.
  • Stanford University: While neither the men’s nor women’s team have won a title, it’s not for lack of trying. We feel confident that the Cardinal will take the title soon. Plus, their tennis and water polo championship showing are quite impressive. Two women’s soccer players, Nicole Barnhart and Rachel Buehler, attended the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
